Artist Statement

My name is Gavin Henderson, but my artistic alias is Kid Dreamer. I never considered myself an artist, and often I still don’t. I actually think I became a graphic designer by accident. It could be fate. I’m Still working it out.

Art is power, freedom, love, and so much more. Art has the power to make statements that transcends time, languages, and human limitations. People can be moved to fight for causes that can change the course of history, for themselves, or everyone. Art can set you free, whether you are painting a picture while listening to music, or enjoying a poem that reminds you of your favorite childhood food. It doesn’t make sense, but that’s the freedom in art, that the freedom from logic that art gives us.

Art is probably the one constant in my life that enrages me, but I will always come back to it. Studying graphic design has been a challenge for me because I want to be as good as my peers, and of course better one day, and I want that day to happen yesterday. But the most important thing graphic design has taught me is patience. I understand now more than ever that anything good is worth the wait, and practice is key to greatness. I always hated when I asked for advice, they would say “Practice,” and now when someone looks at my work and ask “How?” I look at them and say, “Suffering,” which means hard work and practice. I still have a ways to go before I can say I have mastered my craft, but time, patience, and practice are what it takes to become better and eventually the best. Then I will be able to design the future!
